The Further Adventures

Following the success of the complete canon, both on BBC Radio 4 and commercially on tapes and CDs, the BBC commissioned Bert Coules to write a new series of original stories.

It was decided to base the episodes on five of Doyle's tantalising throwaway references to other cases, which he scattered throughout the fifty-six short stories and four novels. A mixture of well-known and more obscure "unrecorded cases" was selected.

The shows were initially planned to star the original team of Clive Merrison and Michael Williams, but Williams' untimely death meant that it was not to be. The role was not an easy one to fill, but eventually Andrew Sachs was invited to join the cast as Dr John H Watson.

Patrick Rayner once again assumed responsibility as producer/director, and the shows were broadcast in January and February 2002. At the same time four of the five titles were released commercially in the UK.

To date there have been three series of The Further Adventures broadcast and three volumes of CDs released. A new two-part story is scheduled for April 2010, when a fourth CD set will see all the existing episodes made available.
